The County plays a significant role in promoting the removal of barriers to accessibility for anyone living in our community. Lanark County’s Accessibility Advisory Committee seeks to assist Council in improving accessibility throughout the County. The committee’s mandate is to develop and update the multi-year Accessibility Plan and to advise council on ways to improve accessibility in the County by removing existing barriers over time and by preventing new ones from being created.
Municipalities with 10,000 or more residents are required by the Ontarian's with Disabilities Act to have an Accessibility Advisory Committee. The committee is comprised of community volunteers and Council representation. A staff working group provides input into the accessibility planning process. Terms of Reference.
The Accessibility Advisory Committee reports to the Corporate Services Committee of Lanark County Council.

We are committed to ensuring that the facilities, services and programs we provide are available to all residents, including people with disabilities. The process of identifying barriers is constant. We continue to identify new barriers and incorporate them into our Accessibility Plan.

Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA)
Ontario has an important law addressing accessibility. It's called the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005. It is the first of its kind in Canada. The goal is to create provincial accessibility standards and make Ontario completely accessible by 2025. Governments, businesses and other private organizations that provide goods, services and facilities to people in Ontario will have to meet accessibility standards. Currently there are 5 standards:

o The plan identifies barriers to municipal practices and services, and recommends solutions for their removal. We encourage you to review the plans and provide input about barriers that may exist in our municipal services, programs and practices.
• National Access Awareness Week
National Access Awareness Week was established in 1988 to promote better access for people with disabilities. The week was created in response to a request from Rick Hansen, following his 40,000 km Man in Motion World Tour. Held at the end of May, it celebrates achievements made both by and for people with disabilities. Look for annual events for National Access Awareness Week on this website in the spring.
