"Lanark County is home to me. It is a little piece of heaven here on earth. There is simply no other place like it! What's even better is that I also work for Lanark County! Lanark County is an excellent workplace and there's a fantastic camaraderie between the staff. My team walks at lunch and promotes good health, nutrition and fitness. It's obvious they strongly value the health and wellness of employees. Health and safety and wellness programs are very prominent here.

The Alternate Work Arrangement (AWA) Program has been amazing for me. Working flexible hours has allowed my children to become more involved in the community and I'm home when I need to be. Participating in an AWA has given me many more opportunities both personally and professionally. I'm looking forward to retiring here - I'm not going anywhere."

"Each day that I walk into Lanark County I am met with smiles all through the hallways from coworkers. The best part of working for Lanark County is being surrounded by a group of people that are all working towards a common goal and that is to serve the community and our county in the best way possible. Each employee is striving to make a difference for the benefit of somebody else and for that, as employees of Lanark County, we are blessed to be surrounded by such strong and motivated personalities.

I enjoy working as part of the Adult Protective Services Team in which we support Adults with Developmental Disabilities. Earlier this year we attended a team building day where we shared some very personal experiences which seemed to draw our team even closer. This camaraderie is not easily found and it is a pleasure to work so closely with people that are willing and able to support each other on a day to day basis. To be able to look across a desk and connect with another person that is experiencing the same struggles as you are, and to know that that person is there if you need them is a very special feeling.

One of the most important aspects of our job is collaboration and you see that day to day within our organization. Whether it be staff and team meetings, specialized training, or peer support, it is all provided by our employer. Very often at Lanark County we participate in friendly sporting events in which we all love to show off our awesome skills, but each person understands that we are not here to be sports stars, but to enjoy the company of our fellow staff members. This brings me back to teamwork and camaraderie, because all employees certainly demonstrate care and compassion for each other which always makes us stronger as a team. What more can I say, Lanark County is an extra special place to work."

There are lots of options to move around and try different positions here. This is where I want to be - this is what's kept me here. We always joke around: if we can't win the lottery and we have to go to work, this is the place to go. It's a great place to be."

"I love the people here. The residents are like family to us and we truly are their family. We keep the residents healthy and well and that's what it’s all about. I love cooking and dealing with food so this job is perfect for me. We serve good food here - the residents are well fed. It's nice to give back and be involved with the community.

I value the diversity here. If you have the qualifications you can move around between departments which is nice. There's a strong sense of community here and I value that. You get the chance to know the people you work with and they become your friends."

"I'm here for the residents - to make sure their needs are met. The residents really just make my day each and every day that I'm here. That's the best part of my job. It's nice to know you're doing something nice for them, and they appreciate it. They show you by doing something nice and it makes you feel good. I work with a great team - you just come in and laugh and have fun and do your work."

"In the 12 years that I have worked for Lanark County, I have had the privilege of working for Social Services, Lanark Lodge, Public Works, Clerk Services, and Human Resources. The County is progressive and with lots of opportunities for growth. I love the fact that the County encourages us to take courses, attend seminars and provides financial support through the Education Policy.

I enjoy the diversity and challenge of my role as a Human Resources Generalist. As the first point of contact and a generalist in the department, I'm involved in many functions of the HR department. We are very team oriented, so I am able to assist County staff with recruitment processes, policies and benefits. I also have the opportunity to participate in working groups which allow me to look at efficiencies and suggest change within the County. I even get to be an event coordinator at times by organizing special events such as the Service Awards Luncheon, Holiday Luncheon and various Spirit Committee events. I love the feeling of bringing people together and seeing smiles on their faces. I feel satisfaction in getting the job done and done well, especially with respect to customer service. I feel I accomplished my purpose at the County when a staff member says, "Thanks, Maria. You were a great help."

Lanark County has always been good to me. I was able to grow within the Corporation while receiving competitive wages and great benefits. As a mother with a special needs child, I value flexible work hours and work life balance the most. The County understands that work is work and encourages staff to take earned vacation time to maintain work/life balance. I could not ask for a better place to work."

"I've had the opportunity to work for Lanark County for the past two summers and it has been fantastic. They really respect and value the work that I do and that makes a difference. My job is never boring - there's always something new to learn and the opportunities here are endless. I attend meetings with my team and am involved in many of the team's projects. This is experience I can't get from school and I'm extremely lucky to have been given the opportunity to work for Lanark County.

Health & Safety week is a great week for the students to start. We get a warm 'Lanark County' welcome and the opportunity to interact with people from different departments. We are encouraged to go for walks on our breaks which really sets the tone for the workplace: health and wellness are strongly promoted here. This opportunity has been invaluable to me."

"What I really like about working for Lanark County is the people, we have a wonderful, dedicated team. Management is very supportive, they maintain an open door policy, and no question is a 'dumb' question. I enjoy being a part of the team and being a team player. Our team is made up of people from different age groups and the diversity makes for a dynamic team, it's important to have that balance.

Lanark County is an amazing employer, they value our work and really go out of their way to demonstrate that. I feel very honoured to have worked here for the last 13 years. Lanark County really respects its employees, it's very obvious."

Ontario Works Supervisor

Ontario Works Supervisor

"The best part about working for Lanark County is the people within both the organization and the community. I enjoy working in the Social Services department, supporting Ontario Works clients towards getting their education and finding and maintaining employment.

Probably one of the things that means the most to me is when Lanark County recognizes the employees' years of service - it really makes you feel appreciated. I've been working for municipalities large and small since I was 17, but I must say I prefer working in a smaller organization because you get to know the staff and understand the roles of different departments. There's so much variety here, you're never bored and there's always something new to learn. I've been working here for 21 years. I'm a manager now but I started out as a case worker. There's a real opportunity to be trained and promoted within the organization. Our supervisor supports us to undergo training to improve our skill set.

I have two kids who are busy with a variety of extracurricular activities and to be able to take part in the Alternate Work Arrangement program has been a life saver. Lanark County strongly supports work/life balance and takes a holistic approach to wellness by recognizing the importance of good health. The wellness program has given me the opportunity to join a gym and I feel the organization's support behind me."

A few years ago I was interested in furthering my education in relation to my job. Lanark County supported me in doing this and that made the difference."

"I really like driving across Lanark County. The sights are simply beautiful and I enjoy the opportunity to make Lanark County a safer place. I enjoy the diversity and challenge of my job. There's a big role change from summer to winter and I like that. The winter months consist mainly of patrolling County roads, while the summer months are often filled with more physical tasks. Lanark County recognizes this change and supports us with many benefits to facilitate our health and wellness. It's nice to feel this support.

I just got back from a three day training session in Guelph, and it was fantastic. I appreciate the training opportunities here. I showed interest in increasing my knowledge and training, and my manager arranged for me to attend Roads School. I feel appreciated and valued here."

"As the first point of contact for Lanark County, I enjoy representing the County and providing support to the public and staff members. Each day is filled with a new project or challenge and this position keeps me constantly busy. I enjoy all aspects of my position, whether it be answering inquiries from the public, assisting staff with various projects, performing my administrative responsibilities or taking on new and exciting tasks.

Lanark County staff make up a great team which makes coming to work every day easy. Our staff activities and initiatives allow for us to build lasting relationships within all departments which in-turn ensures that we work together to provide the best customer service possible.

The County also encourages growth both personally and professionally which encourages staff members to strive as they live a work/life balance."

"I like working with seniors, especially if they're smiling and having fun, but even when they're not, I'm happy. My favourite thing is seeing the residents having fun and enjoying their leisure time.

I love the autonomy I have with my job and my work hours. I structure a calendar of activities ahead for the month which dictates my hours - if I need to modify my hours for an event, it's my call. Residents always come first and management really respects what we do. I appreciate that.

A few years ago I went back to school while continuing to work full time. Lanark County created a modified vacation schedule so I was able to take one day off a week to attend school. The County really supported me in going back to school. It gave me the opportunity to grow within the organization and I couldn’t be happier with where I am now."

Registered Dietician / Associate Food Services Manager

"Ever since embarking on my career at Lanark County as both a Registered Dietitian and as the Associate Food Services Manager, I have had so many opportunities to develop my skills and to grow as a young professional. The training and the learning experiences that Lanark County has offered have been so valuable, and have encouraged me to continually strive to achieve excellence in my field.

In my line of work, I have the opportunity to educate others on nutrition specific topics and I take pride in solving problems and overcoming challenging situations. I enjoy the feeling that comes from building strong rapport with the residents and their families. I feel so privileged to be able to help others, and it is so rewarding knowing that my work is appreciated by my colleagues. Although I am one of the newest members of our managerial team, my colleagues have always treated me as a valuable member and supported me in my role. It is so motivating to work with such a diverse group of driven and dedicated individuals. The workplace environment is a positive and respectful one, and I look forward to work every day.

As an individual who truly believes in healthy living, I believe that Lanark County goes above and beyond in supporting their employees to achieve a healthy work-life balance. Lanark County recognizes the importance of health and wellness and encourages employees to lead active lifestyles by providing a health and wellness promotion. I also participate in the Alternate Work Arrangement Program which allows me to be more efficient in my job and achieve a positive work-life balance. I am so grateful to work for such a supportive organization. Lanark County is truly a great place to work!"

"I truly enjoy my job. It's the interactions with the residents and their families, and with coworkers that make it feel almost like family. Working with the residents is very rewarding. The smallest thing puts a smile on their face. Even if they're not able to say thank you, you know you're doing something positive. You get to know the residents and their families very closely. That's really nice. I have a close working relationship with management. They're very approachable which is huge. They're very receptive and they listen. That's key.

This week I attended an Ontario Nurses Association workshop in Ottawa. It was a valuable training session and I value the opportunity Lanark County provides me to improve and keep current with my skills. We've recently implemented a new electronic nursing system in Lanark Lodge. Lanark County recognized that there is quite a learning curve for some of the nurses and supported us in our training to use the new system. It was very reassuring.

Health and Safety week is huge. The walking program and the tradeshow really promote health and wellness both in and out of the workplace. I feel that this is a safe environment to work in and I truly value that. It's peace of mind for me."

"I think that the senior years in someone's life are very important and should be memorable. I'm grateful that I can contribute to the wellbeing and transition into those years for our residents.

I like working with the Nursing team. We're like a family working together. When I started nursing here everyone was very friendly and helped me to get oriented and learn my way around the building. There's always someone around willing to help. Both the residents and my coworkers make this the place for me."

"I love the versatility of my job. We're doing something different every day and there's always something new to learn. Sometimes the students all work together as a team cutting grass, whipper-snipping, flagging, cold patching, or putting up signs. Teamwork is really encouraged here. Sometimes we're paired up with the full-time staff and we get to work with them and learn what they do. It's a great learning opportunity for us. The students here are really valued and respected. We make suggestions about things we notice, see on our drive in, and they send us out to fix it.

My favourite part of the job is working in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources. They come in and educate us about endangered species, such as turtles, and we track and document what we find. It's really fun.

The wages are competitive for students here, and the hours are fantastic. We work longer hours Monday to Thursday so we can work a half day on Fridays. I love that. The team here is great: everyone has such a positive attitude, it makes coming to work fun."

Social Housing Support Clerk

"Social Housing is not frontline, it's behind the scenes. Making people happy is what it's all about. The in-house training we're provided with is fabulous. We're always kept up-to-date on SOPs, First Aid, WHMIS, and a range of other training. Training really is a bonus!

There is a variety of work here, and you really get to know the people you meet. A few years ago there was an incidence where Lanark County played host as an emergency evacuation centre. I will never forget the teamwork that was shown, and the way people from every department who had never worked with each other were able to come together and work as a team.

I absolutely love the Alternate Work Arrangement program. It's amazing what that break does - it makes the difference. It's a very positive thing. Our great hours build a work/life balance in itself and the wellness program really gives me the incentive to do something healthy."

Software Developer

Software Developer

"I hear from many co-workers that Lanark County is a wonderful place to work, and it is true. We are fortunate to have established an atmosphere of mutual respect, and caring for each other and our community.

In the IT department, much of my work is project based. Getting into a project, the development and eventual delivery of an application, is very rewarding. It is my creative outlet. Sometimes when people think of an IT department, they picture of a group of isolated techies. Not so here, we get to work with every department and our local municipalities, interacting on a personal basis with people across the organization.

As I write this testimonial, today was a good example of the organization's commitment to leadership and fostering of open communication in the workplace: we ended Health & Safety week with a ball hockey tournament and staff BBQ. The bottom line is, I am thankful to work here, and with a great IT department."

Support Service Aide

"I enjoy my job at Lanark Lodge very much for numerous reasons. The residents of course, that's why we're here. They love to see staff, to have someone to chat with, and find out what's going on in the town or around the world, or ask for our help. It's rewarding to put a smile on the residents' faces.

The Housekeeping / Laundry department is a busy place but it's a fun job, the hours are great. I love my co-workers; they're a great bunch of guys and gals. We really support each other here and take care of one another in a crisis.

The opportunities here are wide ranged. We attend lots of training seminars to better ourselves in the workplace. The opportunity to sit on a committee is great; I sit on the Joint Health and Safety Committee. It's a great learning experience and makes me feel more connected to the organization."

Tourism Manager

Tourism Manager

"Tourism in Lanark County is exciting and fun! The Tourism Department handles visitor enquiries from all over the world. I love my job because when I'm providing information to the public, I feel a sense of purpose and that I am contributing to the growth of our local economy.

We are lucky to have such a supportive Council, and business owners that are actively creating new experiences for visitors. On a daily basis, we are receiving photos and programs about festivals and events that we campaign on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. As the Tourism Manager, I am also able to go out into the community and celebrate what Lanark County has to offer.

The most rewarding part is working with the Clerk's Department Team when promoting Lanark County as the Maple Syrup Capital of Ontario. We are able to be creative and work together, whether it be pitching a story to the travel media, creating web pages like "Fishing in Lanark County" or introducing programs like the "I love Lanark County Photo Contest."

Personally, I am so thankful for the encouragement around healthy living and the programs that Lanark County offers to support a real work/life balance."
