Lanark County Councillors and staff are grateful for the opportunity to meet with ministry representatives at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) Conference in Toronto earlier this week.
Delegates met with the Ministry of the Solicitor General on Monday to talk about
continuous, increased funding for the Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT). This partnership between Lanark OPP, Smiths Falls Police Service and Lanark County Mental Health (LCMH) provides an integrated co-response to mental health calls and helps to divert patients from hospitals.
On Tuesday, delegates met with the Ministry of Health to discuss methods to divert low-acuity paramedic calls away from ambulance resources and emergency rooms. The delegation asked for advice and support from the ministry in its pursuit of programs to improve response times, reduce resource impacts to emergency rooms and provide support to residents who don't have a primary care provider by focusing paramedic resources on prevention and high-acuity calls.
Thank you for the opportunity to speak on these important issues! ... See MoreSee Less

Lanark County councillors and staff are on hand for the 2026 Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) Conference being held in Toronto from Jan. 18 to Jan. 20. The conference provides an opportunity for rural leaders to gain education and networking opportunities in an evolving political landscape.
The county will be presenting two delegations to ministries at the conference. On Monday, Lanark County delegates will speak to the Ministry of the Solicitor General about continuous, increased funding for the Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT). This partnership between Lanark OPP, Smiths Falls Police Service and Lanark County Mental Health (LCMH) provides an integrated co-response or follow-up by MCRT-trained officers and crisis workers from LCMH for mental health-related calls to police. The program is proven to divert calls from emergency rooms while providing appropriate support and referrals for clients. The delegation is seeking annualized funding to help coordinate upstream prevention, increase capacity and improve staff retention through stable funding.
On Tuesday, a delegation will meet with the Ministry of Health to discuss methods to divert low-acuity paramedic calls away from ambulance resources and emergency rooms. The new ambulance dispatch system that began in 2025 has provided a more accurate representation of the nature of ambulance calls and has shown that low-acuity calls use a significant amount of paramedic and emergency room resources. As well, the county continues to struggle with access to primary care providers, which also increases pressure. The delegation is seeking advice and support from the ministry in its pursuit of programs to improve response times, reduce resource impacts to emergency rooms and provide support to residents who don't have a primary care provider by focusing paramedic resources on prevention and high-acuity calls.
Good luck to our delegates at ROMA! ... See MoreSee Less
