SUMMARY:Music at MERA: Terra Spencer
DESCRIPTION:A very first impression of Terra Spencer’s music is one of comfortable melody sung confidently\, accompanied by deft fingerstyle guitar or piano. But after the first verse you are wishing you paid more attention. There are stories unfolding here in this music. Terra has been playing instruments from a young age\, but her music career is barely a decade old. This follows a stint as a small town funeral director\, an occupation with a unique window into a community of stories. Wherever her stories come from\, the styles and subjects of Terra’s compositions cast a surprisingly wide net\, quirky\, poignant\, observant\, fascinating. On stage Terra brings easy gentle humor and spontaneous conversation that connects her music together to create a thoughtful\, intimate show. \nThe caliber of Terra’s songwriting has attracted collaborations with such musicians as David Gunning\, David Francey and Ben Caplan. Each of Terra’s 4 strong albums have added to her growing reputation as a quality musician and songwriter. Terra’s latest album ‘Sunset’ was named the 2024 Penguin Eggs Roots Music Canada Critics’ Choice Album of the Year (alongside Julian Taylor’s ‘Pathways’) and Music Nova Scotia Folk/Roots Recording of the Year\, and garnered her ECMA and Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for Solo Artist and English Songwriter of the Year. You may not have heard Terra Spencer before\, but once you do\, you will not soon forget her music. \nFor more information and videos visit https://meraschoolhouse.org/2026-terra-spencer/

SUMMARY:Arts Carleton Place - 2026 Fine Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Arts Carleton Place is pleased to present the Spring Fine Art Exhibition\, taking place on May 2–3 at the Carleton Place Arena\, Upper Hall. This annual juried exhibition celebrates regional artistic excellence and provides the public with an engaging opportunity to experience high-quality fine art in a welcoming and accessible setting. Admission and parking are free\, and visitors will enjoy door prizes throughout the event. \nThis year’s exhibition features the work of fifty-four regional artists\, representing a broad range of styles\, disciplines\, and media. Six participating artists will be exhibiting in Carleton Place for the first time\, introducing new perspectives and creative voices to the show. The exhibition is thoughtfully juried to ensure balance in quality\, originality\, and variety\, creating an experience that appeals equally to collectors\, art enthusiasts\, and first-time visitors. \nA key highlight of this year’s exhibition is the presentation of a new body of work by Colleen Gray\, a local Indigenous artist and founder of Art for Aid. Her latest collection\, titled The Great Return – Terra Incognita\, is inspired by the emotional response evoked by viewing Earth from beyond the stratosphere. The work invites reflection on humanity’s relationship with the planet and our shared responsibility for its future. In recognition of her humanitarian contributions through Art for Aid\, Gray was awarded the Governor General of Canada’s Sovereign Medal for Volunteers in 2019. This collection represents a significant and compelling addition to the exhibition. \nThe Spring Fine Art Exhibition has earned strong praise from past attendees\, who have noted its thoughtful selection\, manageable scale\, and high artistic standards. The exhibition reflects a shared commitment to fostering creativity\, accessibility\, and cultural connection of all ages and backgrounds across the community and beyond regionally. \nArts Carleton Place gratefully acknowledges the continued support of the Town of Carleton Place through its Community Enrichment Program. Proceeds from the exhibition support Arts Carleton Place’s community engagement initiatives and contribute to the continued growth and vitality of the arts in the region. \nFor additional information\, visitors are encouraged to visit http://www.artscarletonplace.com

SUMMARY:Forage\, Feast & Wild Craft
DESCRIPTION:‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’ Hippocrates \nThe forest is more than trees and an ecosystem for wildlife. It’s full of food and medicine. \nIn mid spring\, the air is warm. The scent of damp earth and emerging green rises up to meet you before you’ve even stepped off the trail. Leaves opening. The forest floor covered in dappled light – a brief window before the canopy closes in and the season shifts. \nSpring reveals her rhythm in these delicate yet hardy first greens. The spring ephemerals are here for a short time\, not a long time.\n__ \nWe’ll wander into the forest and see what’s always been growing around us – wild leeks\, stinging nettles\, violets\, trout lillies\, strawberry plants and more – not as plants to be collected and used\, but as allies. As friends who have been waiting for us to slow down long enough to notice them. \nWe’ll identify them\, honourably harvest them\, and taste them while still in the forest. Prepare a shared wild meal from the harvest. Make handcrafted preparations to take home – and learn ways to preserve the harvest and weave these nourishing foods into everyday life. \nYou’ll come to know a way of harvesting that is relational – rooted in reciprocity\, in the plant’s lifecycle\, in leaving things better than you found them. Once you’ve walked this path\, it becomes a way of being.\n— — — \nSpaces are limited – registration required\nhttps://honeybeehomestead.ca/forage-feast \nLunch\, snacks\, herbal teas & all supplies included

SUMMARY:Mississippi Valley Textile Museum Vernissage
DESCRIPTION:Two new exhibitions are coming to the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum in May! Attend the vernissage for “Carole Baillargeon: Rock Paper Scissors” and “Tartan: Culture & Cloth” on Saturday\, May 2 at 1pm. Both exhibitions will be on display until July 26\, 2026. \nOver the last 40 years\, Carole Baillargeon has developed a rich hybrid practice in visual arts\, with references to manual trades\, craft and scenography. Curated by José Niaison\, four bodies of work have been brought together in “Carole Baillargeon: Rock Paper Scissors”\, offering an overview of Baillargeon’s artistic considerations and technical approaches. Two series of works\, one in 2D and the other in 3D\, made of handmade paper; a large installation of felted stones and metal objects recalling our ancestral agricultural heritage; and a three-part series of transformed and expressive tools. This exhibition is supported by Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. \nHosted in partnership with Almonte Celtfest and curated by Meaghan Guthrie and Makayla Moore\, “Tartan: Culture & Cloth” invites visitors to explore the history\, heritage\, and unexpected global journey of this iconic cloth. Tartan is more than just a fabric; it is a symbol of kinship\, identity\, and rebellion woven through centuries and across cultures. This timeless textile represents the history and stories of the Celtic peoples and reveals how a simple piece of fabric can embed itself in culture\, art\, and design. This year\, Almonte Celtfest celebrates its 30th anniversary and will take place from July 3 – July 5\, 2026 in Gemmill Park.

SUMMARY:Bird Exhibit + Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon celebrating the 10th Anniversary opening of the museum\, featuring Ankaret Dean’s Bird exhibition! \nThis exhibition will include baskets that Ankaret has made over several years and many new ones too. She finds using natural materials ideal for making birds using basketry techniques. Lately\, she’s used a combination of wire – used for trellising grapes – for her smaller birds\, as wire is more pliable for making smaller birds and coloured round reed. \nAnkaret has started making birds while living on the farm in Elphin\, they’ve been flying in her house ever since. \nWe hope to see you there! \nThe event is free. Tea and cookies will be served!

SUMMARY:Music at MERA: The Donne Roberts Band
DESCRIPTION:Born in Madagascar\, raised and educated in Moscow\, Donné Roberts was already a musician fluent in Malagasy\, Russian\, French and English by the time he arrived in Canada in 1999. His performances and recordings with the Juno winning African Guitar Summit from 2004 to 2007 gained him wider exposure and appreciation. As part of the Okavango African Orchestra\, Donné was again awarded a Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year in 2017. All the while\, Donné has been a busy musician\, touring with his own band\, and releasing multiple albums including Juno nominated “OYA!” in 2022. His growing success caught the attention of CBC Radio\, who commissioned him to compose the theme music for their popular morning Sunday morning show Fresh Air. \nDonné is an active collaborator with notables such as the Sultans of String\, Amanda Martinez and Toronto-based Japanese singer-songwriter Kiiola\, with whom he performs in the aptly named duo Baobab Cherry. Although much of Donné’s own music is written and sung in his first language\, Malagasy\, his versatility and natural ability to synthesize from his wide experience allow him to create music that is always dynamic\, accessible and fun. Prepare yourself for a lively afternoon with Donné and his band consisting of guitar\, keyboard\, bass\, percussion and multiple vocals. \nMuch like Madagascar music is infused with African\, Austronesian\, Arabic and European influences\, Donné Roberts’ music is a delicious mélange of international sonic flavours. Eric Alper\, March 4th\, 2022 – Cashbox Magazine Canada \n“Above everything else\, Roberts aims for his musical concoctions to be a source of hope and joy.” Darryl Sterdan\, March 2\, 2022 – Tinnitist \nFor more information and videos visit https://meraschoolhouse.org/2026-donne-roberts/
