Commissioner of Oaths
A Commissioner of Oaths is someone who is registered in Ontario for taking affidavits or declarations by asking the applicant to swear or affirm that the information in the document is true and correct. The CAO and Clerk are available to commission documents by appointment only.
When do you need a Commissioner of Oaths?
Commissioner of Oaths services are offered for legal documents such as affidavits, oaths, statutory declarations, transferring ownership of a used vehicle, gifting of a used vehicle to a member of your family to name a few.
*Please note that not all documents can be commissioned at the County. Documents that cannot be commissioned include, but are not limited to wills, powers of attorney, divorce, separation, custody documents, debt, real estate, or estate settlement. The County does not have a Notary Public and cannot notarize documents.
How do I schedule an appointment with a Commissioner of Oaths?
Please contact the Clerk’s Office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, to arrange a time for signing your documents. There is no fee to commission a document. Email info@lanarkcounty.ca or call 613-267-4200 ext. 1199.
What is required to have a document Commissioned?
Applicants must provide copies of the documents they wish to have commissioned and come to the County Administration Building in person. The request for the Commissioner of Oaths service must be made by the same individual taking the oath and signing the document. Individuals signing the document must present a valid piece of government photo identification, no photocopies will be accepted.
*Document(s) to be commissioned must be signed in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths.
