Lanark County’s Backcountry ATV Tour

This ATV tour takes you through the scenic backroads and trails of Lanark County, connecting communities like Port Elmsley, Smiths Falls, Carleton Place, Almonte, and Pakenham. Riders can follow the route using the Ottawa Valley ATV Club (OVATV) trail system, which provides up-to-date information on trail conditions across hundreds of kilometres of trails. With a mix of easy trails and scenic countrysides, this itinerary is perfect for any ATV adventure.

Begin in Tay Valley

Unload your ATVs at a safe parking spot near the trail and head onto the RL26R Trail just off of Gambles Side Road in Tay Valley. This tour is rated “Easy” and is the perfect place to get comfortable on the smooth, wide and flat trail. Head south towards Long Lake, where you will see beautiful wetlands, rocky ridges and great lookout spots. Keep an eye out for wildlife!

Turn onto the RL40R Trail and make your way into Port Elmsley along a smooth trail that passes through quiet forests and open farmland. For a break, stop at Beveridges Locks to explore the historic Rideau Canal or walk one of the local trails. From here, you can continue following the route along the RL1R trail, or take some extra time to explore Smiths Falls, where you’ll find a variety of local restaurants and inviting waterfront views that makes it a worthwhile stop on the journey.
